Cosy Fireside Irish Fragrance inspiration.

My partner Steve’s family are from Kilkee, a little gem tucked along the wild west coast of Ireland County Clare Although Steve himself was born in Cambridge, his dad and grandparents grew up in Kilkee, and his parents eventually moved back there decades ago with one of his brother's and his sister soon following.  

Before meeting Steve five years ago, I had never set foot in Ireland. Our first trip was one September, and the weather was surprisingly beautiful for that time of year. The moment we arrived, I was completely enchanted. The horseshoe-shaped bay, the golden beach, and the dramatic sweep of the North Atlantic coastline absolutely took my breath away.

Since that first magical visit, we’ve gone back many times—hopping on a Friday evening flight from Stansted and returning on Sunday, just for a quick dose of Kilkee’s charm.

But it wasn’t just the scenery that captured my heart. The people of Kilkee welcomed me with open arms; some have become very dear friends. And then there’s the music—oh, the music! Every evening, live tunes spilling into the early hours, and it seems as though nearly everyone in Ireland can sing. I’ve learned the words to many Irish songs now, and I never miss a chance to join in a good sing-along.

In winter, the houses there are warmed by fires of burning peat, as there’s no mains gas. I knew of peat from England—living near the Fens where the soil is dark and peaty—but I had never actually smelled it burning.

One evening, on our usual drive from the airport, just as we reached Kilkee, I asked Steve, “What’s that smell?” He told me it was the peat fires. I instantly fell in love with that smoky, earthy, aromatic scent. Now, the moment it hits my nose, I know exactly where I am.

Cosy Fireside with its smoky cedarwood notes, reminds me so strongly of those peat fires   the moment I first smelled it, I knew I had to create a candle with that fragrance. 

It has become one of this autumn’s favourites—perfect for chilly evenings curled up on the sofa, filling the room with a warm and comforting atmosphere.
